Does the game need an internet connection?
The puzzle itself works offline and there is no account or sign-in. A connection is used only to load advertisements and for install measurement.
Where is my progress stored?
In a small file on your own device. It is never uploaded anywhere. Deleting the app deletes it.
I am stuck on a chapter.
Every chapter can be skipped. The skip control is at the top right while you are playing. Skipping is recorded on your verdict card, but it is never penalised.
Are there ads or purchases?
There are advertisements (they may appear after you finish a round), and nothing to buy. You can limit ad tracking in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
Your progress stays on your device. The advertising and measurement kits in the app collect device and ad data; the full list, and what is used for tracking, is here: Privacy Policy.
